CRAG-Kenya Surveys

Citizen Voice and Civic Responsibility

Democracy becomes stronger when citizens participate throughout the election cycle, remain engaged in governance and hold elected office holders and public institutions accountable.

Why We Listen

CRAG-Kenya conducts surveys and public polls to understand citizens’ experiences, priorities and perspectives. Your responses help us identify gaps in civic participation, deepen public discussion and develop evidence that can inform advocacy, public policy and democratic practice.

We use two complementary approaches. Our quick polls provide an immediate snapshot of public opinion on a focused question, while our detailed surveys examine the same issues more deeply and support structured analysis and learning.

Understanding the Election Cycle

CRAG-Kenya understands the election cycle as a continuous and interconnected democratic process, not a single event held on election day. It includes reviewing the previous election; improving electoral laws, policies and institutions; participating in political parties; identifying public priorities; developing manifestos; registering voters; selecting candidates; campaigning; voting; managing results and disputes; governing; demanding accountability; and preparing for the next election.

The period between elections therefore performs two functions at the same time. Elected office holders and public institutions implement and account for the mandate arising from the previous election, while citizens, political parties and other institutions assess performance, shape priorities and prepare the choices that will influence the next election.

Elections produce a mandate, governance tests that mandate, accountability measures its delivery, and public participation shapes both current decisions and the choices presented at the next election.

Detailed Public Survey

CRAG-Kenya Election Cycle and Civic Responsibility Survey

For Kenyan citizens aged 18 and above · Approximately 7-10 minutes

This survey explores how Kenyans understand their responsibilities throughout the election cycle, where they currently participate, what limits their participation and what could strengthen electoral accountability and democratic governance before, during and after elections.

Both registered voters and citizens who are eligible to vote but are not currently registered are invited to participate. The questionnaire covers political parties and nominations, civic and voter education, campaigns and information, voting, governance, public participation, accountability and preparation for future elections.

How We Use Your Responses

Evidence and Learning

Responses help CRAG-Kenya understand participation patterns, public priorities, barriers and opportunities across the election cycle.

Advocacy and Engagement

Findings may inform civic education, stakeholder dialogue, policy engagement and the development of practical initiatives.

Public Insights

CRAG-Kenya will share appropriate summary findings and insights as evidence becomes available and has been reviewed.

Participation and Privacy

Participation is voluntary. The main detailed questionnaire does not ask for your name, national identification number or telephone number. Responses will be analysed together and reported in summary form.

You may choose not to answer or may leave the questionnaire before submitting it. The survey platforms may process ordinary technical information required to operate and protect their services.

Understanding the Findings

These are open online engagement instruments. Their findings describe the people who choose to participate and do not automatically represent all Kenyan citizens.

CRAG-Kenya will distinguish these public-engagement findings from nationally representative research, which requires a controlled sampling and recruitment methodology.

Findings and Insights

Survey findings, public-interest insights and learning materials will be published here as sufficient evidence becomes available and the results have been carefully reviewed.
